BREAST REDUCTION

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast Reduction is a complex plastic surgery procedure, as it offers a dual benefit: reduction of breast size and weight, along with simultaneous lifting and improvement of shape.

It is not simply a cosmetic correction, but a therapeutic intervention that relieves functional problems. With modern breast reduction, part of the fat and glandular tissue is removed to create a breast that is firm, natural, and above all harmonious and proportional to your body type.

Which women is Breast Reduction suitable for?

Breast Reduction is intended for women who experience macromastia (breast hypertrophy), which may be congenital or caused by weight gain or pregnancy. It is indicated for women who:
• Wear a bra size D or larger.
• Are over 18 years old (although in cases of adolescent gigantomastia it may be performed earlier, around age 15, to prevent symptoms).
• Experience chronic pain in the back, neck, or shoulders, or have skin irritation under the breasts.

What are the advantages of Breast Reduction?

Breast Reduction offers significant benefits, both functional and aesthetic:

• Relief from musculoskeletal pain (neck, back, lower back).
• Improvement of body posture.
• Treatment of skin irritation and dermatitis in the inframammary area.
• Breast contouring for a firm, youthful, and natural shape.
• Easier participation in athletic and social activities.
• Correction of breast asymmetry.
• Increased self-confidence and psychological well-being.

How is the final size determined in Breast Reduction?

The final size is a combination of the patient’s preference and the plastic surgeon’s professional judgment. The goal is to create symmetrical breasts that harmonize with the overall body type.

Detailed measurements are taken before surgery, considering size, degree of sagging, shape, symmetry, as well as the size of the nipple and areola.

What is the procedure for Breast Reduction and how long does it last?

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts between 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on the method and breast volume.

After detailed planning, the surgeon removes excess fat and glandular tissue, eliminates excess skin, and repositions the nipple–areola complex to a higher position, preserving sensation and gland function.

What techniques are used in Breast Reduction?

The choice of technique depends on the degree of sagging, breast size, and the surgeon’s assessment and preference. Incisions may include:
• Around the nipple and vertically toward the inframammary fold (vertical mastopexy).
• Around the nipple with vertical and horizontal incision at the inframammary fold (inverted T).

Each incision type represents a different surgical approach and is selected based on safety, initial size, shape, and scar appearance. The goal is always the best possible shape with the least visible scarring.

What instructions should the patient follow after Breast Reduction?

• Hospital stay: Usually one overnight stay is required, especially due to general anesthesia.
• Dressings/Bra: Dressings are removed within the first 5 days, and wearing a bra is recommended for an extended postoperative period.
• Return to work: Office work is possible within 7–10 days.
• Exercise: Intense physical activity should be avoided for at least 6 weeks.
• Sutures: Sutures are usually intradermal and absorbable; if not, they are removed after two weeks.

How long do the results of Breast Reduction last?

The results are considered permanent, provided there are no significant weight fluctuations. The lifting effect lasts for many years, although natural aging may affect the long-term appearance.
