CHIN SURGERY (GENIOPLASTY)

Facial balance is the key to an attractive appearance. Genioplasty, also known as chin surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure that aims to correct the shape, size, and projection of the chin, enhancing facial angles and improving the profile. The goal is a natural, harmonious, and permanent result that boosts the patient’s confidence.

What is genioplasty and how can it transform your face?

Genioplasty is a specialized procedure that reshapes the chin so that it harmonizes with the nose, cheekbones, and forehead. It is indicated in cases where the projection of the lower jaw—specifically the chin—is insufficient, while proper dental occlusion is maintained.

What are the main advantages of genioplasty?

This procedure offers both aesthetic and psychological benefits:

• Improved profile: Creates proper balance between the nose and chin.
• Enhanced neck contour: Helps eliminate the appearance of a “double chin” when caused by a small chin.
• Permanent result: Unlike injectable treatments, surgery provides a definitive solution.
• Boost in self-confidence: Corrects disproportions that may cause insecurity.
• Invisible incisions: Incisions are usually made inside the mouth, leaving no visible scars.

Who is an ideal candidate for genioplasty?

Genioplasty is suitable for adults (men and women) who have completed facial skeletal development (usually after the age of 18), have proper occlusion between the upper and lower jaws, but reduced chin projection.

How is augmentation genioplasty performed?

When volume enhancement is required, genioplasty is typically performed with the placement of silicone implants or other biocompatible materials:

• The plastic surgeon makes a small incision inside the lower lip or under the chin.
• The implant is placed over the bone and secured in position.
• The procedure lasts approximately 45–60 minutes.
• It is often combined with rhinoplasty for a more comprehensive result.

What level of pain is expected and what does recovery involve?

Despite the complexity of the area, genioplasty is considered a procedure with low pain levels:

• First 24 hours: Mild tension and slight swelling, easily controlled with simple painkillers.
• Return to work: Usually after 5–7 days.
• Diet: Soft diet is recommended in the first days, along with good oral hygiene if an intraoral incision is used.

Can genioplasty be combined with other facial procedures?

Genioplasty is an ideal complementary procedure. The most common combination is with rhinoplasty, as chin correction enhances the overall nasal result. It also combines very well with neck liposuction or a neck lift to create a well-defined and youthful jawline.

Are there risks or complications associated with genioplasty?

As with any surgical procedure, there are some rare risks:

• Temporary numbness of the lower lip (gradually resolves).
• Mild swelling that subsides within about 2 weeks.

Can chin augmentation be achieved non-surgically?

Chin projection can be enhanced with hyaluronic acid fillers, but the results last up to 18 months and require repetition. Fat transfer offers a more long-lasting result, although at least one repeat session may be needed. All non-surgical options are suitable only for mild cases.
