Is aesthetic medicine something that concerns me?

Skin discoloration (also known as hyperpigmentation) can appear at any age. At a younger age, it often presents as freckles, usually after sun exposure without protection and in combination with various hormonal factors (e.g., during pregnancy). Melanin production can also be disrupted by the use of contraceptives, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or external stimuli (which may trigger a post-inflammatory reaction). At older ages, hyperpigmentation may appear as the well-known brown spots on the hands and face. In all cases, the common characteristic is an increased local concentration of melanin in the skin.

Although harmless, it can be considered aesthetically unpleasing and in many cases may add extra years to the appearance of our skin. The depth of hyperpigmentation determines the level of difficulty in removing discoloration. Very often, a comprehensive treatment requires combined approaches over a reasonable period of time.

Topical medication alone or in combination with whitening agents, chemical or mechanical peelings such as microdermabrasion, and the use of specialized Laser and IPL devices are some of the methods used.

Consistent protection from direct sun exposure and regular use of sunscreen are essential for maintaining results and are the only safe way of prevention.
